  • Free shrines & gardens
  • Depachika food halls
  • Bus day-pass

Kyoto can be done beautifully on very little. Many of its greatest sights — shrines, gardens, the riverbanks — cost nothing.

Sleep

Guesthouses and capsule hotels near Kyoto Station are cheap and central.

Eat

Lunch sets (teishoku) at temples and the basement food halls (depachika) are superb value.

Move

Buy the bus day-pass, walk the Philosopher's Path, and time your big temples for opening hour to beat both crowds and heat.
